Training and movementHow do leaderboards work?
Updated 7 July 2026
Competing with others is a great way to stay motivated and track your progress over time. Focal features two main types of leaderboards to let you see how you measure up against the community. You can rank by total XP or by your daily step count. You also have the choice to view the Global leaderboard, which includes everyone on Focal, or the Friends leaderboard, which shows only the people you follow. Understanding how these rankings are calculated helps you maximise your daily activity and earn extra rewards. You will learn the exact requirements to appear on the leaderboards, how the daily steps competition works, the bonus XP available for top performers, and how you can manage your privacy settings.

Key takeaways
The essentials to remember.
- Focal ranks users by either total XP or daily steps.
- You can view rankings globally or just among the friends you follow.
- The global XP leaderboard is capped at 10,000 users.
- Top five daily step counts earn between 4 and 20 bonus XP.
- Ties are broken by total XP, then login streak, then user ID.
- Private profiles may be hidden from public global leaderboards.
Section 3
The XP leaderboard
The XP leaderboard ranks you based on the total experience points you have earned in the app. To be eligible for this leaderboard, you must have completed the initial app onboarding and have an XP total greater than zero. The global version of the XP leaderboard shows the top competitors in the entire Focal community and is capped at 10,000 rows. If you fall outside the top 10,000 users globally, you will not see your name on the main global list, but you can always check your standing amongst the people you follow on the Friends leaderboard.
Section 4
The daily steps leaderboard
The daily steps leaderboard measures your walking and running activity against other users. To appear here, your profile must be set to public and you must enable Apple Health sharing for steps. Your daily step count must be a positive whole number and free of any anomaly flags generated by our system. Bonus XP is awarded daily to the top five users on this leaderboard. To get on the board and compete for these bonuses, ensure your permissions are correctly configured.
- First place earns 20 bonus XP.
- Second place earns 16 bonus XP.
- Third place earns 12 bonus XP.
- Fourth place earns 8 bonus XP.
- Fifth place earns 4 bonus XP.
Section 5
How ties are resolved
Sometimes multiple users will record the exact same number of steps in a single day. When this happens on the steps leaderboard, Focal uses a specific tie-breaker system to determine who gets the higher rank and the corresponding bonus XP. The system checks multiple factors in a strict order until the tie is broken.
- First, the system looks at the daily step count.
- Second, it compares the total XP of the tied users.
- Third, it checks the current login streak.
- Finally, if all else is equal, the user ID determines the placement.
Section 6
Privacy and visibility settings
You have complete control over who sees your activity. If you prefer to keep your fitness journey to yourself, you can adjust your profile settings to limit visibility. Private profiles may not appear on the public global leaderboards. You can still track your own progress and compete with friends if you choose to remain private from the wider community. To manage these preferences, navigate to your profile and adjust your movement and step visibility.
Section 7
Common questions
- Why am I not showing up on the XP leaderboard?
- You must complete onboarding and have a total XP greater than zero. Also, the global leaderboard is capped at 10,000 rows, so you might be ranked below the current display cutoff.
- Why are my steps not appearing on the daily steps leaderboard?
- Ensure your profile is public and you have enabled Apple Health sharing. Your step count must be a positive whole number without any system anomaly flags.
- How do I switch between the Global and Friends leaderboards?
- You can toggle between the Global and Friends views directly at the top of the Leaderboard tab in the app.
- Can I earn bonus XP from the XP leaderboard?
- No, bonus XP is exclusively awarded to the top five placements on the daily steps leaderboard.
- What happens if I change my profile to private?
- If you set your profile to private, you may be removed from the public global leaderboards. You can update your step and movement visibility in your profile settings at any time.

In the app
Where to find this in Focal.
You can find all of your current rankings by tapping the Leaderboard tab located in the main navigation menu of the Focal app. From this screen, you can easily toggle between the XP and steps rankings, as well as switch between the global and friends views. If you are missing from the steps competition, your next best step is to visit your device settings and ensure Apple Health sharing is active. Once connected, take a walk to get your first positive step count logged. Earning your place on the board is a great way to stay consistent and push towards your next fitness milestone.
